John is a retired professor with over 25 years of teaching and academic advising experience at several area colleges including Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, and George Mason University. He received his BS in biology with a minor in chemistry from Marquette University and his MS and PhD in resource development from Michigan State University. He has tutored and advised high school students in the Ashburn for many years and has taught high school courses for homeschoolers preparing for college. He tutors most high school subjects including all the social sciences, history, government, English, math through algebra 2, biology and chemistry. He also works with individual students preparing for the SAT and ACT exams and offers college counseling to students and their parents on a case-by-case basis. He started playing guitar in elementary school and formed a garage band in 7th grade. He still manages to play with a garage band today that occasionally gets out of the garage.
Will is currently a Systems Engineer supporting Federal Government contracts in implementing software solutions. He has worked for a number of high tech firms throughout his 26 year career and has been involved in projects ranging from Software Programming to Sales. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Hampton University and a Masters degree from George Mason University. He enjoys applying his background and skills to tutor students in subjects like Algebra, Geometry and Pre-Calculus. He resides in Leesburg with his wife and two teenage boys. He enjoys recreational sports, cooking, and travel. Availability: In-person and/or Zoom on evenings and weekends to assist grades 6-12.
Julia recently earned her B.S. in Pure & Applied Mathematics with a minor in computer science from Stevens Institute of Technology and has been tutoring since 2013. In all 4 years of high school, she was a math tutor for her classmates in her school’s Peer Math Tutoring program. In her junior year, she won the Peer Math Tutor of the Year award. She also has experience teaching in computer science clubs for elementary school students. For a couple of years during college, she worked at A Grade Ahead, teaching math and English for students at a grade level above their classes in school. She worked with students of all ages from kindergarten to high school. She has also worked in a program called Math Circles for 3 years, where she was the instructor for an elementary school math club. Julia specializes in tutoring math at any level, but also has experience tutoring many other subjects, including writing, biology, and history. Her approach to tutoring is by asking questions to the student and leading them to understand. She believes learning is most effective when you understand why you are doing what you are doing, and her goal is to always teach why things are, rather than memorizing. Samantha recently earned her B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University. She is currently working as a software engineer in the tech industry and participates in mentorship programs for women in STEM. Prior to college, she graduated from Stone Bridge High School in the top 3% of her class and worked at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in the education department. She is available to tutor middle and high school math and science courses.
Shane is holds a B.A. degree in Criminology and a B.S. degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech. He is currently planning to attend law school. Before college, he attended Stone Bridge High School where he ran varsity track and played varsity lacrosse. He was in the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and was eventually awarded the Student-Athlete Award. Tom graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in mathematics, a minor in physics, and Phi Beta Kappa membership. He also graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, what's more, with straight A's. He has done math and physics tutoring for many years, translation from Chinese, and professional music composition/arrangement. He writes prose when he can. He is an Eagle Scout. Danny received B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from Virginia Tech, and is currently working on his doctoral dissertation at Stanford University. He has served as a private tutor to college and high school students for the past six years. He also has experience as a teaching assistant at Virginia Tech and Stanford University. Throughout his teaching experiences, Danny has developed a passion for discovery-based teaching techniques, finding that student’s success and growth is best served by guided ‘discovery’ of the principles underlying relevant material. Amy received her B.A. in Elementary Education at Penn State University, and has been living in Northern VA for over 20 years enjoying her family, volunteer work, dogs and experiences our area offers. She has over 17 years of teaching experience in the Northern Virginia area focused mainly in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. Most of her career has been focused on PS-2nd grade classrooms while tutoring students outside of the classroom in all subject areas. Aimee earned a B.S. Degree from Syracuse University in Exercise Science. She managed health clubs in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area in the late 90's. For the last several years, she has served as a substitute teacher for Loudoun Co. Public Schools and founded Broad Run Crew Inc., promoting amateur & competitive rowing at Broad Run High School. Additionally, every September in Herndon, Virginia, Aimee directs the Tri4Love Triathlon, a USAT-sanctioned event, to help support medical expenses for her daughter, Taylor Love, a two-time cancer survivor, now 15 years old, and bring
awareness and action to this much neglected childhood disease (www.TaylorLove.org). She has several years experience working for Ashburn Tutors tutoring children in all subjects and adults with autism. She lives in Ashburn Village with her family. Dan earned a B.A. in Economics at Drew University, Dan’s career in business gave him extensive experience training, supervising, and interacting with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Dan worked on three continents as a senior executive before moving into education. In addition to fourteen years as a teacher, Dan has five years of experience working with the testing company that designs the Virginia SOLs. Dan earned his Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Shenandoah University while teaching at John Handley High School in Winchester. Dan tutors via Zoom and other online platforms and is available to help not only students, but also parents who are working with children at home in hybrid or 100% virtual learning models. Dan’s philosophy: A good teacher meets students where they are emotionally and academically, then helps them build appropriate skills that lead to greater achievement. Chris earned a B.A. from Christendom College in 2009, and an M.A.T. in Secondary Education from Liberty University in 2011. He has experience teaching and tutoring students at the middle school and high school levels for the past eight years. Currently, he is a high school teacher for the Loudoun County Public Schools district, and tutors middle and high school students in the core subjects of math, science, social studies, and English. Mary R. earned her Bachelor’s from George Mason University and her Master’s in Special Education from Shenandoah University. She is currently an elementary school special education cross categorical teacher in Loudoun County. Before Mary became a resource teacher, she taught a self-contained class for students with autism, and previously worked in positions as an assistant in autism classrooms, as well as a behavior assistant. She is trained in Orton-Gillingham, a phonics-based approach to reading, and has participated in several dyslexia trainings and workshops. She is currently pursuing a certification in Specialized Reading. She lives in Leesburg. Availability: Zoom Only M- F after 3 pm.
Isabella received her Law Degree from the Universidad de la Sabana in Bogota and a Master of Law in Comparative Law form the University of Miami. She is from Bogota, Colombia and has lived in the United States for twenty-one years. She previously worked at Law firms in San Juan, Puerto Rico and in Washington, DC. Isabella stopped working to care for her growing family but stayed involved in her community. For the last eight years she has homeschooled her four children, and is currently homeschooling her two youngest. She has taught elementary and middle school children as a volunteer for the Diocese of Bogotá, Miami and Arlington for over thirty years, and has been teaching for her homeschool co-op for three years. Mary M. earned a B.A. in Journalism from Penn State and works as a freelance writer and editor for newspapers, magazines, websites and corporate communication materials. She serves on the board of a local nonprofit where she enjoys helping high school students find meaningful community service projects throughout Loudoun County. Jordan earned an Advanced Diploma from Broad Run High School and the Academy of Engineering and Technology at the Academies of Loudoun. Before attending James Madison University’s Honors College, she will be taking a gap year to pursue her passion for aviation, crew, and language-learning. She is organized, proactive, and passionate about teaching, as she will be coaching her high school crew team this coming school year. Jordan’s service to others takes many forms: from teaching younger students in her karate school for many years to virtually tutoring Turkish students in English and American culture to helping her fellow musicians in Broad Run’s advanced women’s choir. She works part-time at Great Harvest Bread in Ashburn and volunteers with Civil Air Patrol, hoping to continue her work in the Air Force into college. Alyce is a junior at the University of Virginia. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. At college, she is involved in mentoring and advocating for women in STEM as she is a member of Alpha Omega Epsilon, a professional engineering sorority, and she leads a small group in Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship. She has experience tutoring students in Math and Science as she was the President of Science National Honor Society and Vice-President of Math National Honor Society in high school. Ashley is a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University. She is on the Women's Soccer team at Carnegie Mellon and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. She loves working with kids both inside and outside of the classroom as she tutored in high school as a member of Math National Honor Society, the president of Science National Honor Society, and volunteered for AWANA clubs for 6 years. A 2019 graduate from Broad Run High School, Ashley strongly believes teaching has a large impact on the success of a student, prompting her to invite her 10th grade math teacher to Loudoun County's annual Excellence in Education Banquet. Helen is a sophomore at George Mason University, hardworking, organized, and enthusiastic about her passions. At 16 she flew her first solo and discovered her love for aviation. She is currently working at the Leesburg Airport, is pursuing flight lessons, and is working towards her career goal of becoming a Certified Flight Instructor. Helen has a passion for teaching, and is currently earning her Associates Degree in Teacher Education at Northern Virginia Community College. She loves being active and trying new things.
